Toki / Adze

Toki / Adze

When worn around the neck, the Toki represents courage, and with courage comes strength and power. It is said the toki takes on the mauri or life force of the wearer, and this essence is passed from generation to generation.

POUNamu toki

Traditionally, the toki or adze was expertly lashed to carved wooden shafts and wielded as tools and ceremonial objects by Māori.

A symbol of strength

Māori were skilful woodworkers and one of the main tools they used to construct whare (houses), waka (canoes), and for carving elaborate surface designs was toki (adze). Toki crafted from pounamu were particularly prized for the stone’s strength and ability to retain a very hard, sharp cutting edge. The toki design carries with it deep symbolism associated with mana, reverence, wisdom and ability.

The time-consuming process of

Carving pounamu toki

Carving toki by hand is a labour of love, that requires several steps. Firstly the stone is slabbed and graded. Hereafter every step is done meticulously by hand; straight lines are drawn as close as possible to ensure no stone is wasted, before being cut individually. Then the hard work by hand begins, sanding and shaping the stone before it's skilfully bound. The carver will treat each piece with reverence and respect, taking care that every one is finished to the highest standard.
